Heavy Diesel Mechanic

OVERVIEW/PURPOSE

Mechanics must be capable of assembling, adjusting, maintaining, repairing and servicing heavy construction equipment and service vehicles, including the service and repair of diesel and gas engines. Must have your own tools.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience, at least five years of related experience preferred with electrical/hydraulic and heavy diesel equipment and/or comparable training in the service and repair of heavy construction equipment and diesel and gas engines.
  • Possession of a valid and current Florida driver’s license.
  • Ability to assemble., repair, adjust, maintain and service heavy construction equipment and service vehicles, including but not limited to, graders, backhoes, dump trucks, bulldozers, forklifts, flatbeds, service trucks and other company vehicles.
  • Ability to climb on, in and under heavy construction equipment and other vehicles for repair and service, including bending, stooping, kneeling, turning, crawling, and climbing as required.
  • Ability to perform general service on construction equipment and vehicles, including but not limited to, oil changes; air, fuel and gas filter changes; lubrication; tune-ups and belt adjustments.
  • Familiarity with the ability to utilize various testing and machine shop equipment and power tools, including but not limited to, compression testers, timers, air-compressors, air-ratchets, tire changers, electric power tools and other equipment as required.
  • Ability to inspect equipment and vehicles to determine abnormal conditions and operational problems.
  • Ability to perform testing of diesel and gas engines.
  • Ability to operate and service fuel injector pumps, nozzles and engine governors.
  • Ability to service and repair transmissions, rear ends and other drive control parts for heavy equipment and other vehicles.
  • Ability to repair, service and overhaul various air-cooled engines.
  • Ability to overhaul, repair and adjust starters, generators and voltage regulators.
  • Adequate range of motion and ability to perform general service and repairs in close quarter work areas in and around vehicles, including but not limited to, engine compartments, vehicle beds, undercarriages and other vehicle areas.
  • Ability to climb in and out of various equipment and vehicles using hand holds, footsteps and other areas as necessary.
  • Ability to operate and utilize hoists, truck cranes, forklifts and other equipment for heavy lifting and repairs as necessary.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to operate and utilize ramps and jacks for repair and service of equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to operate various construction equipment on a temporary basis for operating adjustments.
  • Ability to perform emergency in other repairs, maintenance and service of heavy construction equipment and other vehicles at and around construction and job sites.
  • Ability to walk and maneuver on even and uneven surfaces at the shop, plant and construction sites.
  • Ability to withstand various environmental conditions, including but not limited to, normal summer outside temperatures in excess of 100 degrees, the combined effect of heat and humidity during outside summer work, possible low winter outside temperatures and routine rain.
  • Ability to complete and record repair sheets,
  • Ability to effectively communicate with other workers at and around job sites.
  • Ability to withstand airborne particles located at and around shop areas and construction sites, including dust, pollen and paint overspray.
  • Ability to withstand various gases, vapors and fumes within acceptable OSHA/EPA limits produced by construction equipment, service vehicles, solvents, asphalt, paint, engine cleaners, and other materials located or utilized in and around shop areas and construction sites.
  • Ability to perform and timely and productively execute tasks and assignments.
  • Ability to meet weekly attendance requirements, averaging ten hours per day.
  • Ability to meet other attendance requirements, including overtime hours, weekend work, holiday work, night work and shift assignments as necessary.
  • Ability to maintain tools and equipment in proper working conditions.

MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Occasional lifting over 50 pounds.
  • Attendance at staff and safety meetings.
  • Ability to shovel, sweep and perform general housekeeping of work areas.
  • Ability to assist in the cataloging, procurement and storage of parts.
  • Ability to perform minor body work on equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to perform minor touch ups and painting for equipment and vehicles.
  • Occasional assistance of field mechanics at construction sites as needed
